ROAR OF THE TIGER - Summer Dream No. 58
|
This is a very attractive filly that shows a lot of class. She had an impressive move at the OBS June breeze show. She cruised in 21.2 and galloped out nicely. Watch the video and see how she speeds it up a notch after feeling the whip but at the same time shies away from it, swapping leads back and forth without missing a beat. The way she breezed reminds us of how Dr. Zic breezed and she, like Dr. Zic, was broken in February of her two year old year. The filly is by Roar of the Tiger (deceased) who is a full brother to Giant’s Causeway and leading New York sire Freud. Roar of the Tiger was leading sophomore sire in Florida by both winners and earnings. With only three crops of racing age so far, he has sired 4 stake winners to date. Best known this year is the filly Gator Prowl who won the Marshua Stakes and Bear Tough Guy won the prestigious Grey Breeders Stakes as a two year old last year in Canada. She is out of a Wild Rush mare and has a double of Nearcticwhich has produced numerous top runners. There are nice blends on the broodmare side like Silver Deputy, Maudlin and Key to the Mint. This is the second foal and the first one is a multiple stake winner in his new country. The bloodstock agent that bought him told me that he is one of the best horses in Korea. We have since been asked to take a profit and sell this filly, but we have declined. We believe in her and think there is a lot of potential. This filly is beautiful and well balanced with a huge hip. She is light on her feet and she has the scope to carry speed like Dr. Zic. She might not have a fancy pedigree but everything about her exudes quality. She is correct, attractive and has a great mind.

SWEETSOUTHERNSAINT - Mauvin Gway No. 312
|
This two yr old gelding is out of the multiple stake placed mare Mauvin Gway who so far has produced five winners from six runners including the highly talented, multiple group winner, Shake You Down, who ran a rarely seen -1 ½ rag no. His sire, Sweetsouthernsaint (by St, Ballado), was a two year old sensation in Florida. Sweetsouthernsaint won his maiden first time out, at one mile by 8 ever widening lengths. His second start at 1 1/16th was won by 5 and his third and last start at two was the What a Pleasure Stakes which he won by 4 ½. At three, in his only start, he was third in the Holy Bull, which is a well known Kentucky Derby prep, and was injured. Sweetsouthernsaint was retired to Ocala Stud. He covered limited books of mares, based mainly in Florida, thus is not as well known in Kentucky. He sired 13 stake winners from 383 foals (just under 4% stake winners to foals which is comparable) and one champion called Soy Conquistador. In 2010 he is the sire of Storming Saint, who won the Borderland Derby and the talented Tanda who won the G3 Railbird Stakes at Santa Anita and a favorite for the G1 Mother Goose this weekend. He may be best known for siring Sweetnorthernsaint who won the Illinois Derby and was second in the Preakness to Bernardini. He has sired very solid 12% lifetime two year old winners. We are very excited about this horse. In fact Joan calls him her Baby Curlin. He is a strapping individual, the image of his talented father but with even more substance and depth of muscle, and he is lovely mover on the polytrack. He demonstrates a great attitude and loves training. He is an outcross (no duplication of any ancestors in the back pedigree). This is an emerging trait with highly successful racehorses in the last few years…………. Just like Curlin……….imagine that!! Look for him to be running early autumn and we think he will flat fly. We are brainstorming for names …….any ideas????
The two year old sales are a lot of hard work. Steve and Ron Ballou who have bought 50% of both horses will attest. Two full days are spent watching the breeze show. Then each horse needs to be looked at individually back at the barn and then hours spent studying the video’s and pedigrees. I was absolutely delighted to get both these horses as they checked all the boxes for us. I feel fortunate to get the two we wanted…..and at fantastic prices. Buying athletes has always served us well. These horses might not have the “popular” pedigrees, but have what it takes. They are both good sized, correct, athletic individuals, with great balance.
